Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar and now Mr. Kobe Bryant. To say the least, that is arguably the most elite club in the NBA’s History. Bryant eclipsed the mark during the game against the Hornets tonight as the Lakers win only their second road game of the season. With 1:16 left in the second quarter Bryant made a floater for point 30,001. And yet there was absolutely no one there to witness it, yes I’m looking at you Hornets fan’s (The franchise is thinking of change the name to the Pelicans? Really. C’mon man!) But anyways in doing so Kobe becomes the youngest player in NBA history to reach 30K at a youthful age of 34 years and 104 days. But to Bryant who has been in the NBA since he was 18, 34 is the new 40 in the NBA.
I’m sure Byrant is content and humbled by the honor, but still nothing means more to him than that 6th ring. With the Lakers one game under .500 now after tonight’s win Bryant is more focused on meshing Howard, Gasol and himself together so that the Lakers can get back on track. But for at least the next three hours or so Bryant will enjoy being apart of the 30k club. But when the clock hits 12AM, it’s back to number 6.
Interesting fact of the night: 4 of the 5 members of 30k have played for the Lakers at one point in their careers. Sport’s greatest franchise? Up for discussion.
